Tomas Mata Obituary

Tomas Mata, 96, of Pharr, Texas, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 23, 2026, at McAllen Medical Center, surrounded by the loving family he cherished so deeply.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Emeterio Mata and Marianita Gracia-Mata; his beloved wife, Margarita Rocha-Mata; his son, Tomas Mata, Jr.; and his 6 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his three daughters, Maria Angelita Castillo (Luis), Leonila Mata, and Graciela Cano (Ray); his daughter-in-law, Ninfa Mata (Tomas Mata Jr. +); 11 grandchildren, Leticia Prado (Jerry), Jose Angel Mata (Vickie), Marivel Mata, Araceli Franco, Ray Cano Jr. (Caroline), Rafael Mata (Olga), Fabian Cano (Sabrina), Javier Franco Jr., Michael Cano (Dina), Juan Carlos Franco, and Genna Cano (Marvin); 28 great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Tomas Mata was born on December 21, 1929, to Emeterio Mata and Marianita Gracia -Mata in General Bravo, Nuevo León, Mexico. One of 10 children, he grew up with a deep love for simple joys — he often spoke fondly of tending to the goats as a boy, and later developed a passion for racing horses. As a young man, he made his way to the United States in search of work, laboring in the fields and in produce warehouses. It was through his job in a produce warehouse that he found something far greater: the love of his life, Margarita Rocha. The two married in 1953 in a small, intimate ceremony, and together built a beautiful family of six.

He was a man of many virtues — warm-hearted, full of life, and quick to make anyone around him laugh. Family was everything to him. There was not a room he entered where his presence did not immediately command attention and earn the deepest respect.

He loved making friends wherever he went. If you ever crossed his path, you were guaranteed a great conversation and several laughs.

He was immensely proud of each of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Every accomplishment, every degree, and every promotion was met with a broad smile and enthusiastic applause, followed by his signature words: “I’m so proud of the way you carry our family name on high.”

Whenever someone asked how he was doing, his answer was always the same, without fail: “Eternally grateful to God for this life that He has granted me.”

We, his family, are also eternally grateful to God for the tremendous blessing of having had him in our lives.

Le sobreviven sus tres hijas: María Angelita Castillo (Luis), Leonila Mata y Graciela Cano (Ray); su nuera, Ninfa Mata (Tomás Mata Jr. +); y 11 nietos: Leticia Prado (Jerry), José Ángel Mata (Vickie), Marivel Mata, Araceli Franco, Ray Cano Jr. (Caroline), Rafael Mata (Olga), Fabián Cano (Sabrina), Javier Franco Jr., Michael Cano (Dina), Juan Carlos Franco y Genna Cano (Marvin); 28 bisnietos; y 7 tataranietos.
