Paula Pedraza, also known as ‘Paulita’, 83, passed away on May 12th, 2024 at her home in her hometown of Pharr, Texas. Paula was a loving wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She is preceded in death by her husband, Elias Pedraza, her parents, Melecio and Felipa Pecina, her brothers, Julian Pecina and Santos Pecina, and sisters, Josephina ‘Chepa’ Medina and Lupe Espinoza. She is survived by her sister, Esperanza ‘Pera’ Gomez.

Paula was a devoted mother and a hardworking woman. She fell in love and married Elias Pedraza on May 31, 1956, in Vale, Oregon. Before settling in Texas, they lived in Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Firebaugh, California. She raised seven children and imparted her strength, perseverance, and wisdom to them. She made her livelihood at Haggars early on in life and then went on to establish several businesses. This entrepreneurial spirit made her a woman ahead of her time.

Paula was known for her calm, quiet demeanor and funny one-liners. She was always direct and insightful in her communication. She loved cooking, gardening, sewing, cross-stitching, card games, shopping, and traveling. She loved to travel with her family and looked forward to summer for this reason. Her most coveted trips included a trip to Hawaii with her daughters and granddaughter, Paris with family and friends, and frequent trips to California to visit her beloved siblings. 

You could almost always find Paula in one of two places: her kitchen or in her garden. She loved cooking homemade meals for her family. She spent countless hours making lunch from scratch for her weekday lunchtime visitors. Some days her children would join, others her grandchildren, but every day she could count on her husband to come through the door after a morning of work. In the afternoon, you could always find her on her patio watering her lush green plants. She’d marvel at her plants, delight in new flowers, and welcome unique birds, but mainly her favorite bird, the cardinal. Her garden was where she felt most at peace.

She embodied the expression “Actions speak louder than words.” While she was not one to talk about her feelings, she showed her love through her intentional actions and gestures. She served as the caretaker for many of her family members, including her parents and siblings. She supported her children wholeheartedly and cared for each of her grandchildren, making her beloved to all of them. She will be missed everyday. 

Paula P. Pedraza is survived by her three sons, Mario Pedraza (Yolanda), Javier Pedraza (Celina) and Hector Pedraza (Nora Iris (†)); four daughters, Lydia P. Alemán (Hector), Linda P. Morales (Margarito), Sylvia Cuellar (Martin), and Rosa Pedraza; her sister; Esperanza ‘Pera’ Gomez, and her 19 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren.

Thank you to the nurses and medical staff of Opus Care and her care providers (Nereida, Mela, Chelo, and Lorena) for the quality and intentional healthcare provided.  A viewing will be held at DeLeon Funeral Home (700 E I-2, Pharr, Texas, 78577) on Tuesday, 5/14 beginning at 3:00PM with a rosary beginning at 7:00PM. A funeral mass will be held at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church (216 W. First St, San Juan, Texas 78589) on Wednesday, 5/15 at 10:00AM followed by the burial at Roselawn at 11:00AM (1201 S. Paula era una madre devota y una mujer trabajadora. Se enamoró y se casó con Elías Pedraza el 31 de mayo de 1956 en Vale, Oregon. Antes de establecerse en Texas, vivieron en Idaho, Oregón, Utah y Firebaugh, California. Crió a siete hijos y les impartió su fuerza, perseverancia y sabiduría. Trabajó en Haggars desde temprana edad y luego estableció varios negocios. Este espíritu emprendedor la convirtió en una mujer adelantada a su tiempo.

Paula era conocida por su carácter tranquilo y silencioso y sus frases divertidas. Ella siempre fue directa en su comunicación. Le encantaba cocinar, hacer jardinería, coser, jugar a las cartas, ir de compras y viajar. Le encantaba viajar con su familia y le encantaba el verano por esta razón. Sus viajes más codiciados incluyeron un viaje a Hawaii con sus hijas y su nieta, París con familiares y amigos y viajes frecuentes a California para visitar a sus queridos hermanos.

Casi siempre podías encontrar a Paula en uno de dos lugares: su cocina o su jardín. Le encantaba cocinar comidas caseras para su familia. Pasó muchas horas preparando el almuerzo para sus visitantes a la hora del almuerzo entre semana. Algunos días se unían sus hijos, otros sus nietos, pero todos los días podía contar con que su marido entraría por la puerta después de una mañana de trabajo. Por la tarde, siempre podías encontrarla en su patio regando sus plantas. Se maravillaría con sus plantas, se deleitaría con las flores nuevas y daría la bienvenida a pájaros únicos, pero principalmente a su pájaro favorito, el cardenal. Su jardín era donde se sentía más en paz.

Ella encarnó la expresión “Las acciones hablan más que las palabras”. Si bien ella no era de las que hablaban de sus sentimientos, mostró su amor a través de sus acciones y gestos intencionales. Se desempeñó como cuidadora de muchos de los miembros de su familia, incluidos sus padres y hermanos. Apoyó a sus hijos de todo corazón y cuidó de todos sus nietos, haciéndola amada por todos ellos. La extrañaremos muchísimo.

A Paula P. Pedraza le sobreviven sus tres hijos, Mario Pedraza (Yolanda), Javier Pedraza (Celina) y Héctor Pedraza (Nora Iris (†)); cuatro hijas, Lydia P. Alemán (Hector), Linda P. Morales (Margarito), Sylvia Cuellar (Martin) y Rosa Pedraza; su hermana; Esperanza ‘Pera’ Gómez y sus 19 nietos, 27 bisnietos y 7 tataranietos.

Nos gustaría agradecer a su familia que le brindó atención y amor las 24 horas del día. Gracias a las enfermeras y al personal médico de Opus Care y a sus proveedores de atención (Nereida, Mela, Chelo y Lorena) por la calidad y la atención médica brindada. Se llevará a cabo un velorio en DeLeon Funeral Home (700 E I-2, Pharr, Texas, 78577) el martes 14 de mayo a partir de las 3:00 p.m. con un rosario a partir de las 7:00 p.m. Se llevará a cabo una misa fúnebre en la Iglesia Católica St. John the Baptist (216 W. First St, San Juan, Texas 78589) el miércoles 15 de mayo a las 10:00 a. m., seguida del entierro en Roselawn a las 11:00 a. m. (1201 S Calle principal Mcallen, Texas 78501).
