Lydia F. Perkins, 96 years joined our lord on August 22, 2024 surrounded by her family.
She is survived by her son, Gerald A. Perkins, daughters, Bianca J. Perkins and Lydia J. Perkins (John) Harkey, granddaughters, Morgan L. Harkey (Bret) Lindemann, Madison A. Harkey (Dorian) McCradic, 2 great grandchildren, Penelope and John Dorian McCradic, brother, Victorino Flores, Jr, nieces, Belinda Flores (Dennis) Simons, Mari Guerra Gillis, Rosi Guerra Kuehn, Julie Flores Sanchez and nephews, Robert Flores, Jr, Royce Rene Flores, and Robert Williams.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald Perkins, mother, Santos Rodriguez Flores, father, Victorino Flores, Sr, brother, Robert Flores, Sr, sisters, Marina Flores (Fernando) Guerra, Angelita Flores (Robert) Williams, niece, Nina Guerra Ryan and nephews, Javier Flores, George Flores, and Jimmy Williams.
Lydia was born and raised in Pharr, Texas and worked as a bookkeeper. She graduated from Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School 1946 and attended UT Pan American to study accounting.
Lydia volunteered in the Special Olympics and coached many Special Olympians. She formed the Tri City Angels to coach those with disabilities to participate in the Special Olympics for many years.
Lydia was recognized on October 25, 1992 as the 933rd Point of Light of 1,000 recipients for her volunteer services by President George H.W. Bush. Her name will forever be listed as a light at the George H.W. Bush Library in College Station, Texas.
She held the board chair for the San Juan Memorial Library. She was instrumental in helping the City of San Juan in planning the building of the library in November 2011. She also served many years on the board for Tropical Texas Behavioral Health.
Lydia was a passionate advocate, playing a crucial role in giving a voice to those who needed it most. She loved to sit outside with Joe and Blanca Gonzalez and numerous friends. She would often stop passersby for a friendly chat. She had a deep appreciation for Asian art and looked forward to the Christmas season with great excitement. Her favorite part of the Christmas holidays was transforming her home with an array of dazzling lights. She took great joy in encouraging her neighbors to join in, often exclaiming, "We need more lights!". Beyond her festive enthusiasm, Lydia cherished spending quality time with her family and granddaughters.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 from 5pm to 9pm with a 7pm rosary at De Leon Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at 10am at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Pharr. Burial will follow at Magic Valley Memorial Gardens in Pharr.
